Yesterday I heard someone in the hallway mention that Doug had died. I hadn't heard his name in years. But it hit me in the face like a slap. I was shocked to say the least. I remember looking forward to seeing his television specials. He came to Omaha when I was in high school. As a birthday present, my dad took my sister and I to the show. We had terrible seats, but at least we were there. I was amazed at the dexterity of his fingers and his ability to show everyone how he did the "slight of hand". Yes, he did seem to be as amazed as the audience. I am dismayed by the "New" magicians on t.v. now. There's no magic to their magic. They obviously are looking for the big thrill and the big bucks. I'm also dismayed by the postings placed by some of the kids on this page. They obviously have never watched someone demonstrate the magic of magic. They are probably too into their video games or some other brain vegetating activity. So Doug, even if it's only one kid, I hope you can help him or her learn that life is not to be taken for granted. Appreciate the little things and see the wonder of it all. Maybe, there might even be a kid who has those "magic fingers" and may someday share in your spirit of caring, entertaining and wonder. P.S. Say hello to Heather for me.
